Sony and Panasonic Develops "Blu-ray" 300 GB

Optical disc media that has the highest storage capacity of current Blu-ray is the disk space of 25 GB or 50 GB for dual-layer versions. There is also a BDXL variants that increase the capacity to 128 GB of data.

Capacity, however, is apparently still viewed less by Sony and Panasonic. As quoted from Geek.com, the two companies recently formed a partnership to develop a new standard for next-generation optical media.

Capacity searched unsparing, ie at least 300 GB. The plan, "successor" Blu-Ray is already going to be ready by the end of 2015.

Although other storage media such as external hard disks, USB flash drive, and cloud storage has been widely developed and used, the optical media is still deemed necessary for a particular purpose.

Sony gave the example of a data archiving, video production, broadcasting, and cloud data centers that require high-capacity optical media. Optical disc production costs are also relatively inexpensive, while the product itself can last a long time.

In the film industry, slowly but surely began a shift to 4K video format which requires large storage media. For instance, the first 4K movie can be downloaded (Timescapes) size reaches 120 GB.

Sony and Panasonic are not the first plans to make an extra-capacity optical disc relief. In 2008 ago, Pioneer had showed Blu-ray disc that can hold 400GB of data in 16 layers, each of which contains 25GB.
