Microsoft Admits Late in Mobile Business

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who has announced he will retire from office, acknowledged that his company was too slow to react in the smart phone business that lately it is growing very rapidly.

According to Ballmer, Microsoft is slowly changing the focus in the smart phone business. "I'm sorry, in the period of the early 2000s, when we focus on what we should be doing around Windows that we are not able to move our focus to a new device called a mobile phone," Ballmer said.

"That is the thing I regret," he added, as quoted by the BBC.

However, Ballmer believes, at this time Microsoft has a huge opportunity in the smart phone business after acquiring the business unit and service Nokia cell phone valued at 7.2 billion U.S. dollars in early September 2013.

Smart phone and tablet market currently dominated by Google's Android operating system and Apple's iOS.

According to the research institute Gartner, the Android operating system is still a market share stood at 79 percent in the second quarter of 2013. In second place is iOS controlled 14.2 percent of global market share.

Meanwhile, Gartner noted for the first time Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system managed to beat BlackBerry. Windows Phone is now in third place for smart phone operating systems globally with a market share of 3.3 percent in the second quarter of 2013.

Anshul Gupta of Gartner analysts argue, Microsoft should continue to focus on application development Windows Phone as an attraction for users.
